Deceptive Trailers, Patti LuPone Joins the MCU, The 2022 Box Office Disappointments We Loved
Movie trailers are designed to give you a glimpse of what to expect from a film. However, in the quest to avoid giving away the whole game, a lot of trailers will twist and alter facts, tricking audiences into expecting scenes that may not be in the final film (if you’re my age you no doubt remember how the trailer for Twister featured a scene where a tire slams into a car window in a POV shot that’s nowhere in the final film). Heck, sometimes they just use alternate takes of scenes that make it into the movie. And up until now, that wasn’t a big deal.
But that might change, and soon. Remember that movie Yesterday, about a guy who wakes up in a world where only he remembers the Beatles? Well, the trailer for that film featured a quick shot or two of Ana de Armas. But de Armas isn’t in the final film — and some of her fans weren’t happy about that. In fact, they were so unhappy that they decided to sue Universal Studios for false advertising. And here’s the thing: the judge in the case just ruled “in favor of the plaintiff's claims that the trailer fell under false advertising laws.” Which opens the door for other potential lawsuits against deceptive trailers. Which means trailers might be about to change.
The deceptive trailer story is just one element included in the latest /Film newsletter. Read on for more. And since this is the last newsletter until after the holiday weekend, let me say happy holidays, folks! Have a good one.
