The Evolution of the #MeToo Movie, The Horror Remake Craze of the Early 2000s, Goodbye Leslie Jordan
This is a public service announcement: Barbarian, one of the year's best surprises, is now streaming on HBO Max. Believe the hype — this is a good one. Funny, scary, and overflowing with surprises and twists, it's proof that fun horror movies are still an option. Don't get me wrong — I love the uber-serious "elevated horror" that's often about (you guessed it) trauma. But sometimes you just want a fun, scary movie, and that's what Barbarian is.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to the newsletter! In today's issue, Doctor Who heads to Disney+, we say goodbye to Leslie Jordan, Paul Dano's Riddler gets his own origin story comic, a look back at the early 2000s horror remake boom, a look forward at the evolution of the #MeToo-inpired movie, and much more.
Have You Heard the News?
Disney owns everything, so of course, news broke today that new seasons of Doctor Who will premiere globally on Disney+.
Character actor Leslie Jordan has died at the age of 67. Jordan's death caused the production of Call Me Kat, a show in which he co-starred, to halt production.
Nothing lasts forever, and Apple TV+ has raised its subscription prices for the first time since it launched. For what it's worth, the streaming service has several great shows (like Ted Lasso, for instance), so it might be worth the pricing upgrade. Maybe.
Mike Judge's animated series Bad Crimes was in the middle of production, but Netflix just went ahead and pulled the plug on the show. Yikes.
The House of the Dragon season 1 finale is HBO's most-viewed finale since (you guessed it) Game of Thrones.
The Green Knight director David Lowery is releasing a new short film — and you can only find it in one place.
Reviews
Paul Dano was so into his role as The Riddler in The Batman that he went ahead and wrote an entire origin comic for his character. Erin Brady reviews the first issue here.
